How to set up your company Facebook page

Part one of our Social Media for Business guide focused on how best to use Twitter to market your company. Next up we’ll be tackling that other social network – Facebook.

Facebook is undoubtedly the most popular social media site and the one that gets the most attention. You’d be hard pressed to find any major business that lacks a Facebook page these days, so it’s time your company had one too! Facebook is a great tool for branding, advertising, customer engagement and humanising your company. So let’s get started.

Setting up your account

First things first – you’ll need a personal account – no way around that. But as there are currently 1 billion active monthly users I’m going to assume you already have one! You’ll use this account to log in as you normally do, with the option to switch over to your company page once created.

To get started on building your company page, you’ll need to go here and click the Create Page button. Follow the instructions presented to you and choose the best options for your business.

Branding your page

Now that you’ve got your page set-up, it’s time to make it look good. Nothing looks more unprofessional than a pixelly, stretched out cover photo, so let’s keep it classy.

You’ll need two images to start, an avatar (or profile picture) and a cover photo. The cover photo is 851 x 315px and the avatar is 160 x 160px. It’s up to you what you choose, but you’ll need to keep in mind that Facebook has some rules when it comes to your cover photo – mainly that you cannot include promotional text (“40% off today only!”), contact information or any call-to-actions (“Like our page” or “Visit our website”).

For your avatar, choose something that will stand on its own and will be immediately recognisable as this is what people will see when you make an update.

Brands getting it right

Here are some examples of companies getting their branding right, creating memorable and recognisable pages:

What’s in a name?

When you first create your company Facebook page, you are going to have a generic URL like facebook.com/pages/orion-creative/101281436686531?ref=ts&fref=ts

Very messy and definitely not easy to remember! However once you hit 25 Likes, you are able to select a username of your own. While logged in as your business, click Edit Page > Update Info > Resources > Select a Username

Once here you can select a nicer URL/username, such as facebook.com/orioncreative
